Encountering God in Scripture: a meditation on the coming kingdom of God

Take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the centre. Label one side ‘the kingdoms of this world’ and the other ‘the kingdom of heaven’.

On the first side jot down any words, phrases, images that express what values, behaviours, or outcomes seem to characterise our world as we know it. These may be positive or negative. Think about our contemporary culture and all that it stands for.

Now read the following passages which describe the Kingdom of God which Jesus came to establish:

Isaiah 65: 17-25

Micah 4: 1-4

Revelation 21: 1-4

Pause and reflect on each passage in turn. Then return to your sheet of paper and under ‘the kingdom of heaven’ write down words, phrases or images that express the values, behaviours and outcomes of God’s renewed, transformed creation.
